Looking through Cooling Towers by Bernd and Hilla Becher, I noticed that many of those buildings looked fantastical to me, but I believed that the structures were really. The only thing that made me believe they were real were the photographs.
So I used the Bechers’ cooling towers and made my own (using a computer), the idea being to create “cooling towers” that would look completely convincing, yet that would be fake and that would give away, if you looked carefully, that they were fake.
I am not sure to what extent I succeeded. I personally never got to the stage where I was able to look at these pictures and not see completely fake cooling towers. On the other hand, not a single person I showed these pictures to figured out that these were not photographs of real structures.
